Schuiteman, Art 1862 and Wilhelmina Rensink 1870 Family
This family story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial book of 1991 page 520 and submitted to the book by Gertrude Rozeboom. It was transcribed for this BIOS and some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Art Schuiteman was born January 4, 1862 at Nunspeet, Netherlands. He came to America in 1880 at age eighteen accompanied by his brother Gerrit who was fifteen years old. They fled from the Netherlands because at age eighteen every young man was forced to serve in the military for one year. When he came, all of his earthly possessions were in one trunk.
Art and Gerrit settled on a farm one-half mile south of Sioux Center. They purchased the land for three dollars per acre. On March 6, 1890 Art married Wilhelmina Rensink. She was born July 25, 1870 at Waupon Wisconsin. Wilhelmina and her parents had moved to Sioux Center several years before. Art and Wilhelmina settled on a farm two miles east and one mile north of Sioux Center.
Seven children were born to Art and Wilhelmina. They were Anna who married Henry Kruizenga, William who married Dena Kempers, Minnie who married Joe Navis, John who married Henrietta Sandbulte, Grace who married Herman Ennema, Myna who married Ed Schut and Art who married Katherine Hofland. To these unions were born thirty grandchildren.
The children had many happy times on the farmstead. They attended the country school one mile couth and one mile east of their home. The Schuitemans were members of the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center.
Mr. and Mrs. Schuiteman retired to Sioux Center. Their son John, resided on the home place. Mrs. Arvin Schuiteman and family now operate the farm.
Art died January 27, 1934. Wilhelmina died December 24, 1944. Both are buried in the Sioux Center Cemetery.
