VanMaanen, Albertus ‘Bart’1859 & Mina VanMaanen family

This family history comes from the Sioux Center Centennial book of 1991, pages 569 an 570 , it was submitted by Mrs. Elizabeth Van Maanen. Transcribed for this Bios by Wilma J. Vande Berg. Some Research notes were added at the end by Wilma J. Vande Berg

Albertus ‘Bart’ and Mina Van Maanen came over from the area of Ede, Netherlands with their five children on July 23, 1892. They first settled near Alton, Iowa on a farm. Albertus was born Jun 19, 1859 at Bernekom, Netherlands to Hendrik Van Maanen and Gysbertje Geurtsen. They were married in the Netherlands on August 7, 1880. Mina was born August 7, 1861 (error see birth record in research notes) and died in 1951 in Sioux Center. Bart died February 24, 1933 in Sioux Center.

Bart Van Maanen had a brother Evert born December 16, 1856, who with his wife and seven children came to this area also. They had three more children in America.

Bart and Mina farmed five miles north of Sioux Center and then three miles north and a half west, there they lived until they moved to town and built the house at 104 1st Ave SE in about 1920. In about 1951, there son John B. Van Maanen bought the house and John’s wife Elizabeth still lived in that home today. Bart and Mina were member of the Christian Reformed Church where he was an elder for many years. Bart was a first organizer of the Farmers’ Co-op Society in Sioux Center.

At the time of his death the obituary in the Sioux Center News of March 2, 1933 related that Bart and Mina Van Maanen had fifty three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Therefore, their descendants today some 58 years later, would be numerous.

The Ten children of Bart and Mina Van Maanen were as follows:

1. Anna Van Maanen was born Oct 20, 1880 and she married Henry J. Berghorst on Feb 28, 1905. They lived in Hill-Beaver Creek MN, area and were the parents of ten children: Albertus Bert Berghorst married Hattie Stip, Samual Sam Berghosrt married Gertrude Baron, Mina (Mrs. Clarence Dooyema), Johannes Joe Berghorst married Jeanett Post, Edward Berghost married Dena Eppinga, Frank Berghorst married Sophia Schouenberg, John Berghorst married Virginia Mann, Lubertha (Mrs, Charles Brink), Henry John Berghorst married Hermina Van Holland, and Ann (Mrs. Walter Wichner). The mother Anna died January 8, 1948 and the father Henry died March 21, 1978.

2. Gertrude Van Maanen was born on February 2, 1883 and she married Timen Tim Rens on March 4, 1908. They were from Hull IA and the parents of two children; Raymond Rens married Matilda Bos and Albertus Bert Rens married Madeline Koele. The mother, Gertrude died March 16, 1961 and the father, Bert, died May 29, 1958.

3. Jennie Jane Van Maanen was born November 7, 1885 and she married Cornelius Wassink on Nov 7, 1907. They were form Sioux Center and the parents of six Children: Arend Wassink born 1908 died 1926, Mina Wassink born 1912 died 1928, Nellie (Mrs. John Brummel), Albertus Wassink born 1923 died 1931, Arend Wassink married Rosella Blankespoor, Cornelius Wassink born 1928 died at two months of age. The mother Jennie died Feb 27, 1969 and the father Cornelius died Dec 13, 1951.

4. Hattie Van Maanen was born Dec 24, 1887 and she married Gerben De Jong on January 21, 1914. They were from Hull and the parents of four children: Mina (Mrs. William R. Hulstein), Thomas De Jong married Martha Vogel, Albertus DeJong married Edith W. Neiwenhuis, and Arnold De Jong married Adelaide H. Punt. The mother, Hattie died Sept 20, 1974 and the father Gerben died May 24, 1974.

5. Evert Ed Van Maanen was born October 3, 1890 and he married Maggie Mulder on Feb. 21, 1914. They were from Hull and the parents of Nine children: Ella (Mrs. Andrew Meedering), Abertus Bert Van Maanen married Theresa B. Hoekstra, Rudolph Roy Van Maanen married Grace Scholten, Tuenis Tom Van Maanen married Gerden Vande Schaaf, Mina (Mrs. Theodore Heokstra), Edward Van Maanen married Alyda Kraayenbrink, Margaret (Mrs. Donald Hoekstra), Harold Van Maanen married Lois Sandbulte, and Jane (Mrs. Henry Hoksbergen), Evert Van Maanen, the father died July 23, 1961 and the mother, Maggie died March 10, 1953.

6. Grace Van Maanen was born July 19, 1893 and she married Conrad G. Hulstein on April 10, 1914. They were from Carmel IA and the parents of eleven children: Gerrit Fred Hulstein married Johanna M. Vande Linden, Mina A. Hulstein born 1916 died 1934, Caroline M. (Mrs. Marvin De Kam ) , Emma (Mrs. John P. Vogel, Etta (Mrs. Bert Baker), Albertus Hulstein married Arta Hop, Gertrude (Mrs. Henry Vonk), Viola (Mrs. John Delfs), Minerva ( Mrs. Gerrit Vander Streek), Winerva Hulstien and Mina (Mrs. Leonard Nyhof). The mother Grace, died May 29, 1971 and the father, Conrad, died Apr 1, 1972.

7. Mina Van Maanen was born Oct 16, 1895 and she married John R. Rens on Feb 27, 1914. They were from Hull and the parents of eight children: Angelina (Mrs. Clarence Sybesma), Mina (Mrs. Arie Burgraff), Robert Rens married Lena Beukelman, Albertha (Mrs. John DeGroot), Janet (Mrs. James Kroese), Albertus married Jacoba Koele, Marvin Rens married Evelyn Vande Oever, and Delmar Rens married Henrietta Koele, Mother, Mina died May 28, 1982 and father , John died Nov 13, 1971.

8. Winnie Van Maanen was born Aug 3, 1899 and she married Henry P. Vis on Dec 17, 1919. They were from Hull and the parents of five children: Peter Vis married Louise Punt, Mina (Mrs. Peter De Stigter), Hendrene (Mrs. Berend Stuit), Bert Vis Married Alice Eshuis and Henry W. Vis married Evelyn J. De Jong, Mother Winnie died Aug 13, 1968 and father Henry died Dec 20, 1967

9. Albertha Van Maanen was born Aug 2, 1901 and she married Ben Bleyenberg on Feb 6, 1924. They were from Sioux Center and the parents of six children: Mina (Mrs. Tuenis Jansma), Arta (Mrs. John Haverhals), Bernice (Mrs. Peter Reynolds), Delores (Mrs. John Hoksbergen), and Alvin Bleyenberg married Betty Bleyenberg. Ben died Aug 14, 1986 and Albertha is in the nursing wing.

10. John B. Van Maanen was born Feb. 24, 1904 and he married Elizabeth Rozeboom on July 1, 1927. They were from Sioux Center and the parents of three Children; a baby died in infancy, Delbert married Darlene Ulferts and Joan Ellen (Mrs. Merle Van Roekel), John died Oct 17, 1966 and Elizabeth still lives in her home.

In 1933 the van Maanen’s had 53 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Their descendants today would be numerous.

Albertus Van Manen was born at Bennekom, Ede, Gelderland, Netherland 19 June 1859 to Hendrik Van Manen a farmer age 46 and Gijsbertje Geurtsen.

BIRTH RECORD of Mina Rozeboom Van Maanen
Born 27 May 1863 at Ede Gelderland, this particular record did not give parents, parents listed in obituary as Jan Van Maanen and Antje Roseboom.
However, a birth record was found for a Mina Roseboom born 27 May 1863 Bennekom Ede to Antje Roseboom and no father listed, at the bottom of the record states ‘Gewettigd by huwelijkop 25 July 1873 door Jan Van Maanen’. Translated - Justified by marriage on 25 Jul 1873 by Jan Van Maanen. He was most likely the father of Mina.

Albertus van Manen a farmer age 21 married Mina Van Maanen age 17. His parents were Hendrik van Manen and Gijsbertje Geurtsen; her parents were Jan Van Maanen and Antje Roseboom, married 7 Aug 1880 at Ede, Gelderland Netherlands

Mrs. Bart Van Maanen Sr. passed away quietly at the home of her children, Mr. and Mrs. Gerben De Jong (with whom she made her home for almost two years) on Wednesday, July 4th at 3 p.m.
Mrs. Van Maanen was born on May 27th, 1863 in the Netherlands, daughter of John and Antje (Roseboom) Van Maanen, and reached the age of 88 years. Her husband died February 1933.
To this union 10 children were born, their oldest daughter Anna (Mrs. Henry Berghorst) of Hills, Minnesota, died January 8, 1948.
The surviving children are Gertie (Mrs Tymen Rens), Jennie (Mrs C. Wassink), Hattie (Mrs. Gerben De Jong), and Ed Van Maanen all from Hull, Iowa, Grace (Mrs C. Hulstein) Sioux Center, Mina (Mrs. Jno. Rens) Hull, Winnie (Mrs. Henry Vis) Hull, Alberta (Mrs. Ben Bleyenberg) and John Van Maanen of Sioux Center. She also has 56 grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. G. Van Holland of Rock Valley.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 7th at 1 p.m. at the home. Reverend J. D. De Jong officiated, and at 1:45 at the Second Christian Reformed Church, Reverend J. Breuker officiating. Burial took place at the local cemetery, and six of her grandsons acted as pallbearers, Bert E. Van Maanen, Albertus De Jong, Albertus Hulstein, Albertus Rens, and Albertus Vis, and Delbert Van Maanen.

Bart Van Maanen passed away last Friday
Bart Van Maanen passes away quietly at his home Friday afternoon after long illness. For the past months Mr. Van Maanen’s condition remained about the same but last week he suffered a relapse which caused his death. Mr. Van Maanen was seventy four years old at the time of his death. For the past forty years he has lived in this vicinity.
Mr. Van Maanen was born at Bernekom (Bennekom) Netherlands june 19, 1859, In 1880 he was united in marriage to (wrong- Gerteude Geursten in Holland, she was his mother!! It was Mina Van Mannen he married) After 12 years in Holland Mr. and Mrs. Van Maanen left their native land for the great country acorss the Atlantic, the United States. Being a farmer, Mr. Van Maanen settled immediately in Sioux County, near Alton. After a year and a half there he moved to a farm near Sioux Center. Several years ago Mr. and Mrs. Van Maanen retired and moved to Sioux Center where they have lived ever since.
Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Maanen all of whom are still living. Mr. Van Maanen is survived by his wife, and children Mrs. Henry Berghorst of Beaver Creek MN, Mrs. Tim Rens of Hull Mrs. Crnelius Wassink, Mrs Gerbin De Jong, Evert Van Maanen, Mrs. G. Julstein, Mrs. John Rens, Mrs. H. Vis, Mrs. Ben Bleyenberg, and John Van Maanen all of Sioux Center. He is also survived by fifty three grandchildren and seven great grand children.

Van Maanen Funeral Held Here Monday---Was Resident This Community For Forty Years
Bart Van Maanen, a resident of this vicinity since the early 90's, died Friday at his home in Sioux Center, at the age of 74.
Mr. Albertus "Bart" Van Maanen was born at Barnekom, Holland, June 19, 1959.
He was married August 17, 1880 to Miss Gertrude Geurtsen (sic)( Getrude Geurtsen was his mother! His wife real name is Mina Van Maanen). In 1892 the family came to the United States and settled near Alton where they lived for a year and a half, then moved to a farm near Sioux Center.
Ten children, 8 daughters and 2 sons, were born to the couple and all of these, with the mother, survive. The children are, Mrs. H.A. Berghorst (Anna), Beaver Creek, Minnesota; Mrs. Tim Rens (Gertrude), Hull; Mrs. C. Wassink ( Jennie) ; Mrs. Gerben De Jong (Hattie), Perkins; Ed, Doon: Mrs. C. Hulstein (Grace), Sioux Center; Mrs. John Rens (Mina) and Mrs. Henry Vis (Winnie), both of Perkins; Mrs. Ben Bleyenberg (Alberta), Sioux Center; John, Perkins. 53 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, also survive.
In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Van Maanen retired from farm life and came to live in Sioux Center; which has since been their home.
Mr. Van Maanen was a devoted husband and parent and a staunch member of his church, the Second Christian Reformed, where services were held Monday at 2:00 o'clock, following brief rites at the home. Reverend Ypma, pastor of the church, officiated at both services.
