There was no completed Bios for Abram and his two wives with their children for the author of this Bios , Wilma J. Vande Berg, to transcribe. However there are numerous accounts that were taken from various historical sources that are contained herein.

Find a Grave lists Abram Van Steenwyk as born 18 Aug 1830 Utrecht, Utrecht Municipality , Utrecht Netherlands died 16 Mar 1900 Orange City, Sioux County Iowa, buried in West Lawn Cemetery Orange City IA. He immigrated with this parents and siblings to America in 1847 on the ship Nagasaki with the Hendrik Scholte group, settling in Pella Iowa.

From the book “Souvenir History of Pella Iowa 1847 -1922 Page 36.
Included in the names of the passengers who sailed on the Good Ship Nagasaki, which left Rotterdam, Holland, April 11, 1847, for Baltimore were the names of the Van Steenwyk family.
(note one source stated he came with his parents 1847 and in the 1850 census his mother is head of family in Lake Prairie Marion County IA. Further research indicates Jan Van Steenwyik died Nov 1847 at Pella Iowa.

In the immigration passenger list M. J. Oostman Van Steenwyk is listed as born 1803 and coming in 1847, also in listed J. Van Steenwyk age 41 born 1806 came in 1847 to Baltimore. Willem Arnoud born abt 1828, Willem born abt 1832, Geertruid Johanna, Gerardus , Abraham . Jan Gysbertus. Truitje, Niesje, all came same boat same time.

Read the pages 46 – 54 of the above mentioned book for a glimpse into the first years in Pella Iowa.

The 1850 census of Lake Prairie, Marion, Iowa, lists Maria J. Van Steenwyk age 47 (mother) is father deceased 1847, Children Willem A. age 22; Abraham age 20, Willem age 18, Gerardus age 14, Nicole age 12 and Gertruda J. age 10
The 1860 census of Marion County Iowa has Maria J. Van Steenwyi age 57 born about 1803 children Niesje 22 and Geertruida 21.
The 1860 census of Marion County Iowa has Abram Van Steenwyk age 29 born about 1831 and wife Maria J. C. VanStenwyk age 24, and son Jan age 1.
The 1870 census of Lake Prairie Township Marion County Iowa (before they left for Sioux County) lists Abraham Steenwyk age 40, Maria J. C. 43, John 11, Johanna 9, Gysbert 7, Abraham 5, Cornelia 3,. and Maria J. C. baby.

In the book “The Story of Sioux County” 1942 by Charles Dyke page 566, there is a list of the families that left Pella by wagon in the spring of 1870 to make their new homes in Sioux County Iowa. Abram Van Steenwyk is among that list of families. The book gives good insight into the life of the Sioux County pioneers.
In the book “The Centennial Book of Orange City” 1870-1970 pages 8-12 gives the first years of the Orange City colony.

The life of the Abram Van Steenwyk family hinges mainly on the hard pioneer work of making a living from farming and raising a large family.

A. Van Steenwyk died at his home three miles west of town last Friday morning aged 70 years. the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Steffens Monday afternoon.

His first wife was Maria J. C. Le Cocq 1836 1873 married 1855 Pella IA two children John 1859 and Johannes 1861. Second wife was Etta Abma 1855-1915 married 1874 Orange City IA, children were Frank , Bertha 1875, Bouke 1876, Nancy 1877, Maria 1879, Mark 1882, Garrett 1884, Anna 1887, Maretta 1889 and Louisa 1892.)

Death of A. (Abram) Van Steenwyk
Last Friday morning at 5 o’clock, March 10th, at the family home three miles west of Orange City, Mr. A. Van Steenwyk departed this life after a long and painful illness at the age of 70 years. Mr. Van Steenwyk was one of the colony’s earliest settlers, and was a man universally respected by all. His life was a useful, Christian and active one, and he leaves his family well provided for. His death, though not unexpected, brought deep grief to the family and friends.
Deceased was born in the Netherlands in 1830, emigrated to the United States in 1847, where in Pella he was joined in marriage to Maria Johanna Cornelia Le Cocq March 8th, 1855.
To them eleven Children were born, seven of whom survive him. In 1971 he moved to Sioux County and two years afterward his wife died at the age of 37 years. On Nov 26, 1874, he was married to his present wife, out of this union eight children were born , all of whom are living.
The funeral services were held from the Frist Reformed church on Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor Rev. N. M Steffens, and the remains were interred in the Orange City cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family.

She was the daughter of John Francis Le Cocq 1805-1888 and Neeltje Heeren 1796-1872 Maria married Abram Van Steenwyk 8 Mar 1855 Pella Marion Iowa.
