HENRY and ELIZABETH HERTER family

Henry Mathias Herter was born Jan. 10, 1859 at Huntington, IN, to parents of German descent. His father was born in Ernstein, Reinsisen, Germany and came to the U S in 1852. He married Anna Mary Zelling in 1854, at the Methodist Church in Huntington, IN.; and to that marriage nine children were born – six boys and three girls. When Henry Mathias Herter was six years old the family moved to Victor, IA, and later to Deep River IA.

Mother of Lila and Edna, Elizabeth Schmidt was born June 113, 1861, at Elmstein Rheindfaltz, Germany. She came to Youngstown, OH., when a young girl of eighteen. An older sister had come to America earlier, and Elizabeth came to live with her sister in 1879. She was united in marriage to Henry Mathias Herter Dec 4, 1883. At Montezuma IA. They came to Hawarden, IA., May 10, 1884 and were pioneers of Sioux County IA.

There was no “Gladstone Hill” at that time as it was prairie or pasture. Newcomers wanted to live close to the railroad, and so the Herters made their home at the west part of town near the railroad.

To Henry and Elizabeth three Children were born. Hiram J. Herter was born July 17, 1884, but died June 15, 1902, when there was an epidemic of diphtheria. Every home having it was quarantined and a large sign warning ‘Diphtheria” was posted at the home’s entrance. No funerals were allowed. The second children born to Henry and Elizabeth was Lila J. Herter who was born June 29, 1883, and later Edna L. Herter was born on June 11, of 1898.

Henry Herter was a mason by trade and a very good one. Many, many homes were finished during this time. He was very particular about his work, and people came from all around the area to engage him.

Lila Herter graduated from Hawarden High School, and worked for the Hawarden State Bank until her marriage to Floyd Edminister. She had a lovely voice and was often called upon to sing at social functions and funerals in Hawarden.

Her husband, Floyd was born Oct 30, 1885, in Leavenworth Co., KS. He married Lila M. Herter Dec 15, 1920. Mr. Edminister was a veteran employee of Central Telephone and Utilities from 1930. He served as group manager of properties in South Dakota and from 1937 was general purchasing agent at Sioux Falls, SD. Lila and Floyd made their home at Sioux Falls until he received his transfer to La Crosse WI, where he was made Division Purchasing Agent with the La Crosse Telephone Corporation which positon he held for twenty five years. After retiring at the age of sixty five he was appointed to the position of city assessor by the City council of La Crescent where he and Lila were living. He held this position for sic years. He was a fifty year member of the Dale Lodge #456 AF and AM at Hawarden, and the El Riad Temple and Scottish Rites of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Lila was a member of the Congregational Church and of Eastern Star. She died Apr 12, 1985, and Floyd and Lila are buried at Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden.

Edna Herter graduated from Hawarden High School. She obtained a teaching certificate and taught country school. Following her marriage to Harry Dawson June 27, 1923, she and Harry moved first to the Buffalo Farm and then to their home in South Dakota where they lived until retiring to their new home in Hawarden.

Edna is a member of the Congregational Church, a fifty years member and Past Worth Matron of Eastern Star, and a member of the P.E. O. sisterhood. She also is a member of the Mutual Improvement Club. A fifty year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of rural Friendly Neighbor Club.

Her husband Harry died Nov 3, 1965. He was a well-known farmer and cattle feeder. His biography is enlarged upon in this book under ‘The Family of James Dawson”.

Henry Hearter 40 born Indiana , Mary 30 born Baden Germany, children – Theodore 12, Henry 10, Lydia 9, Daniel 7, Mathilda 5 William 2 Emma 9 mo.

Further found a report on line done by others, that Henry (father of Henry M. ) was born 2 Feb 1827 presumed Germany died 20 Sep 1894 (according to the WPA index of cemeteries in 1939, there is a Henry Herter born 24 Feb 1827 died 20 Sep 1894 buried in Goldenrod Cemetery Deep River, Poweshiek County IA.) . His wife Mary Ann Herter was born 17 Apr 1837 Germany died 20 Jun 1924 Deep River buried in same cemetery in Deep River, IA, Children mentioned were Daniel John Herter 1861- Dec 1918 Des Moines IA, Frederik G. Herter 1872-1958, and Henry Mathias Herter 1859-23 Jan 1934 Hawarden IA.
An entry for Theodore born 1857 died 21 Oct 1937 Hazelwood cemetery Grant Tsp Poweshiek County IA.
