Military service: Drafted into the U. S. Army in 1971, during the Vietnam War and was stationed at Fort Ord, CA. While serving, he obtained the rank of SP4, shooting specialist and military police corps. Discharged in 1973, he continued to serve in the U. S. Army National Guard.

Employment: While in California, he was employed by the City of Marina Fire Department before returning to Iowa. Over the years, he worked as a kill floor foreman at the Oakland (IA) Beef Plant; he then worked for Walnut Creek Fertilizer and Regional Water for a number of years.

Hobbies/Interests: Loved camping, boating, and riding the waves on jet skis, especially at his favorite spot, Lake Okoboji, IA; also enjoyed hunting and fishing; his greatest joy stemmed from being a constant supporter of his grandchildren, cheering them on from the starting line of elementary through high school events.
