He was then employed by the Farm Service Agency where he enjoyed working outside measuring grain bins.

Hobbies/Interests: Involved in his community as a Trustee of Fairview Township, as a member of the Harlan Library Board, and served on the East Pottawattamie County Fair Board; dedicated member of the Fred Funston American Legion Post in Avoca, IA, where he held the offices of Commander and Chaplain, and was also a member of the Mt. Nebo Masonic Lodge in Avoca. He enjoyed following his sons' musical activities, their scouting careers and also participated as a Scout Leader; enjoyed playing cards with family; loved to read, particularly mysteries and westerns; enjoyed his cabin on Black Hawk Lake; enjoyed hunting and fishing
