Education: Attended country school near Irwin, IA and graduated from Irwin High School; she then attended the University of Northern Iowa and obtained her 2-year teaching certificate. In 1975, Cherrie returned to the university and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in education.
Religious affiliation: Baptized and later confirmed her faith in the Lutheran church; while in Fort Dodge, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church there

Employment: Began her teaching career in Oakland, IA before moving to Fort Dodge, IA, where she spent most of her career teaching elementary education
Hobbies/Interests: Loved summers spent with family at Lake Okoboji, IA; also took the children on road trips to Colorado to visit friends; working daily crossword puzzles; she cheered her children on at basketball games, track and cross country meets. Was an avid sports fan and particularly loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas Jayhawks college basketball teams, with the Final Four season being her favorite time of year; was an excellent bridge player. Cherrie was very involved in politics and after her retirement from teaching, she ran for State Senate in Iowa; she also opened her home to host staff from the national campaign for president. In 2001, she and her daughter Jennifer attended the inauguration of George W. Bush in Washington, D.C. In later years, Cherrie thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren and spending time at their ballet and sports performances.
