Employment: After graduating from high school, he began working for a concrete construction company. While working, a load of concrete dropped on him and crushed his pelvis. After the accident he went from working with concrete to working with asphalt. He moved to Harlan, IA in 1964 and started his career at Western Engineering. Cal worked for other asphalt companies over time, but Western Engineering always held a special place in his heart.

Hobbies/Interests: Liked to restore antique tractors, tinker in the garage, collect coins and spend time with family and friends; also enjoyed shooting guns and was a sharpshooter; he particularly enjoyed fishing.
