Education: Attended St. Michael's Catholic School for grade school. In middle school, Joe played the trombone in the marching and jazz bands; was a member of the National Honor Society, the state football teams, and qualified for State playing golf before graduating from Harlan Community High School, Class of 1987. He then, along with his twin, Tom, attended Creighton University, Omaha, NE, where they continued their golf careers. They joined the Sigma Nu Fraternity and made lifelong friends. Joe graduated from Creighton in 1991, with a Bachelor of Science in Business and Finance.

Religious affiliation: Was a dedicated parishioner at St. Michaels Catholic Church, Harlan, IA, serving on the parish and finance councils, as well as managing the endowment fund investment; member, Knights of Columbus, frying fish on Fridays during Lent and selling Monday Night Football raffle books

Employment: After graduating from Creighton University and looking for a full-time job, Joe washed dishes at Gorat's steak house in Omaha, NE. He started his work career in 1992 at InvaCare for 5 years, selling durable medical equipment covering the states of Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. In 1997, Joe opened his own Edward Jones office in Fort Dodge, IA. Joe returned to Harlan, IA in 1999 to work with Tony Hough at Midstates Investment Center, with a plan of having brother Tom join them the following year. In 2010, Joe and Tony opened Hough and Zaccone Investment Management where he worked until his passing.

Hobbies/Interests: Hunting, fishing, skydiving; taught himself to play the piano and amused himself and others trying to the play the harmonica; loved to travel, taking golf trips with buddies and cruises with friends. He frequently drove to Omaha, NE to support his beloved Creighton Bluejays, but his favorite pastime was golf. Importantly, Joe loved and supported all things Harlan: a lifelong Booster Club member, you could see Joe and Tom running the chains at Friday night football games, working the clock at wrestling meets, or working the finish lines at both track and cross country meets. In addition, he was a TeamMates mentor to middle and high school students, chairperson for RAGBRAI (“Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa”) committees, served on the board at the Harlan Golf and Country Club, and was most recently a member of the Dream Playground fundraising committee. He was frequently first in line to buy raffle tickets or baked goods at parish picnics or any fundraisers in the county. In 2006, he and Tom were awarded Citizens of the Year by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.
