Employment: In 1943, Al began working in Avoca, IA, cleaning car parts and running the local town theatre until midnight to help support his family. Later, in Atlantic, IA, he was employed by Deter Motors for more than 25 years. During this time, he unselfishly helped the community, as well as those traveling through the area who found themselves stranded with automotive issues, making sure they safely continued their journey. He was an entrepreneur and owned several family businesses. Additionally, he was often seen around town mowing lawns and tilling gardens. Upon his “retirement,” the next chapter of his life included working for Pellet Farms and then managing the Olive Street Station in Atlantic, IA. After that, he became a greeter at Walmart for 11 years.

Hobbies/Interests: Loved racing and restoring cars, flying Cessna’s, and watching NASCAR and University of Iowa Football; had a sweet tooth, loving donuts and, especially, his mom’s banana cream pie.
