Religious affiliation: Baptized at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Council Bluffs, IA; confirmed at the Congregational Church of Christ, Harlan, IA; he later converted to Catholicism; was an active member of active at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Harlan, IA, playing bass guitar in the praise band.

Time spent with friends and family was significantly important, whether it was camping with his grandchildren, tailgating and cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, or going to Canada for a fishing trip with his stepfather, sons, and brother.
