Education: Attended school at Layton #5 country school through grade 8 and then attended Walnut High School, graduating with the Class of 1945. She then attended the Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing in the U. S. Cadet Nursing Corps, Omaha, NE, in August 1945. She graduated in August 1948 as a licensed registered nurse.

Religious affiliation: Baptized as a youth at the German Evangelical Lutheran Church; lifetime member of Peace United Church of Christ, Walnut, IA

Marriage: Albert Dale ("Dale") Petersen; Dec. 6, 1947; Vermillion, SD

Employment: Shortly after their marriage, Dorthea and Dale started farming southeast of Walnut, IA in 1950. She helped on the farm doing chores and helping with the fieldwork. They went on to farm several different farms in the Walnut area. Dorthea completed a nurse refresher course in 1962 and then worked as a RN at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan, IA. She was next employed at the Harlan Physicians Clinic, for 10 years, and, later, was employed by The Atlantic Medical Center as the nurse for Dr. Thomas Payne, MD. She retired in 1994.

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed doing handwork, sewing most of the family clothing, and also knitting, crocheting, and quilting; she also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family. Dorthea and Dale were active supporters and volunteers in the Walnut community. They supported their children by attending school events and extracurricular activities. She was an active member of the AMVETS Auxiliary Post 45, American Cancer Society for the Cass Unit, Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Christian Women’s Club, and the Red Hat Society. Dorthea moved to Immanuel Lakeside Village in Omaha, NE in 2011. She became an active resident of the Lakeside Community and was a charter member of the chime choir and served as the ‘Grand Mum’ of the Red Hat Society.
