Employment: After high school, Allyn worked several jobs until he began farming full-time in 1959: he had worked at home on the farm, picked corn for the Harlan, IA cannery, worked at the Harlan Farm Service Coop gas station, and drove truck hauling fertilizer, lime, and crushed rock for his uncle, Lee Lytle. He retired from farming in 2008 when his health began to fail. He had been a member of the Shelby County Pork Producers and the Shelby County Farm Bureau.

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed supporting his daughters in all of their various activities, attended stock car races at several Iowa tracks and NASCAR races in Kansas City; he enjoyed camping at the Iowa State Fair, Spencer Fair, and Lake View, and attending local high school football and basketball games. Allyn loved visiting with people gathered at Grabill's Bean Shed, the Irwin Elevator, and Burger King. He enjoyed family summer camping trips; for over 40 years, Allyn and Bev were in a card party: families who met in their homes so the parents could play Pinochle and visit while the kids played together.
