Education: During his early years, he attended school in Santa Barbara, CA; after his family’s relocation to Iowa, he attended school in Council Bluffs and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, Class of 1956; after his military service, Vern attended University of Nebraska at Omaha for 3 years.

Military service: After high school, Vern enlisted in the U. S. Army, serving honorably until his discharge in 1963

Marriage: Linda Turner; Feb. 5, 1966; Council Bluffs, IA

Employment: Before he completed his time at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Vern was hired by the Iowa State Patrol where he worked for 15 years. He then worked at Western Engineering and Cedar Valley Corporation, Waterloo, IA as a safety director. He fully retired in 1998 but continued helping part time as Highway Helper Driver with the Iowa State Patrol.
