Feb. 2,1902—Dec. 28,1992

HARLAN — Alma Amanda Gruhn, daughter of Fred and Amanda Asmus Gruhn was born Feb. 2, 1902, on a farm, three miles south of Manning in Carroll County. She grew to adulthood on this farm and attended Jefferson Twp. No. 1 country school She worked for area famines until her marriage to Louie Thomsen on Sept. 29, 1920, at Manning. After their marriage, they farmed the Thomsen farm, 1 and 1/2 miles south of Aspinwall in Crawford County. They also farmed near Gray and Elk Horn,-before retiring and moving into Harlan, where he became the caretaker of the Harlan Golf and Country Club. He was accidentally killed at work on Oct 20,1960. After his death, she continued to make her home in Harlan, where she worked at the Baptist Memorial Home and Harlan Bowl.

June 12, 1962, she married Glenn Custer in Harlan, where they continued to make their home. After Glenn's death on March 30, 1975, she continued to make her home in Harlan, where she continued to be active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign War's Auxiliary. WW I Auxiliary and several card clubs.

She died on Dec. 28, 1992. In addition to Louie and Glenn, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Freda Langbehn and Lena Jansen; two brothers, Henry and Ed Gruhn; one granddaughter, Stephanie Thomsen; and a step-great-grandchild Todd Custer.

She is survived by two sons, Raymond (Fern) Thomsen, and Roger (Pat) Thomsen; two daughters, Doraine (Bud) Wigg and Marvel (Fred) Brodersen; and a sister, Eden Anne Radnich. She is survived by a son. Max (Carol) Brodersen of McCook, NE.; 1 daughter, Margaret Ann Hatcher of Harlan; 2 grandsons; 1 granddaughter; 2 step-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Cecil Camery of Harlan; and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Jan. 15, 1993, at Pauley Funeral Home with Rev. Harrison J. Kline of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, officiating. Burial was in the Jacksonville cemetery with Max Plumb, Elmer “Sparky" Larsen, Fred McKee, Norman Stamp, Robert H. Paulsen and Gaillard Lund honorary casket bearers. Casket bearers were Max Bacon, Michael J. Brodersen, Bert Hillers, Leroy Anastasi, Richard J. Brodersen and Harold E. Johnson. Pauley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
