Jane Marie (McKenna) Stessman
April 11, 1934 - January 31, 2014

Jane Marie Stessman, 79, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by family, on January 31, 2014. Jane was born on April 11, 1934 to Edith and T. Leo McKenna in Storm Lake, IA.

Jane was Valedictorian of St. Mary’s High School Class of 1951, and after graduation she moved to Omaha, NE, where she met William (Bill) Stessman. They were married in Tacoma, WA, on March 8, 1955, prior to Bill shipping out to Korea. They moved from Millard, NE, to Owatonna, MN, to Rochester, MN, to Southern California, before settling in Charlotte, NC, for the past 32 years.

Jane was an avid golfer with two holes-in-one. A member of Raintree Country Club, she always enjoyed a day on the links. She loved sports, games, beating her kids in HORSE and Jarts, and Duke basketball. Jane will be remembered for her cinnamon rolls, knitted baby booties, feistiness, good humor and baby blue eyes. Not to be forgotten is her line, “Pick up that thread before you trip over it.”

Jane is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, Bill; three daughters: Sheryl Stessman (Annie Paulsen) of Alameda, CA; Laura Englund (Jeff) of Rochester, MN; Lisa Stessman of Los Angeles, CA, and son Mark Stessman (Tina) of Charlotte, NC. She leaves behind five grandchildren: Andrew Englund (Kammi), Amy Schrandt (Nathan), Emily Stessman, Kara Stessman, Kierney Jarvis and great grandsons Ian and Kolton Englund. She is survived by sister Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Cawley (late Donald) of Mililani, HI, and brother Irwin ‘Mack’ McKenna of Okoboji, IA. Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Elaine McKenna. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Jane was blessed by numerous friends and neighbors who provided their love, support, strength and encouragement throughout her life, but especially during her recent battle with lung cancer. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Drs. William Bobo and John Mahoney and their staff, as well as Hospice and Palliative Care of South Charlotte.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at The Daily Chapel at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Charlotte. Inurnment will follow at St. Matthew Catholic Church Columbarium.
