Employment: While attending UNO, John worked at Union Pacific Railroad; he returned to Irwin, IA to become the fourth-generation proprietor of Paulsen’s Store. After retiring from the store, he finished his college degree at Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, IA, and began working at Jacobsen Seed Company in Lake View, IA

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s school events and activities; was an avid sports fan and rarely missed a football game in Irwin; also followed the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Kansas City Chiefs; enjoyed horse racing and loved a wide variety of musical genres, especially jazz and blues; ran in marathons and also liked to walk, swim and bike. Later, he and Rose Kruse, his longtime companion, traveled together, making many trips to Germany and other European countries.
