Education: Attended the Exira (IA) Community Schools and gradukated with the Class of 1952. While in high school, he participated in football, basketball, and baseball where he was the pitcher. The team made the state baseball tournament all 4 years he played and they won the state title during his senior year. After high school, he attended Iowa State Teachers College for 1 semester. He later attended the University of Northern Iowa and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1959.

Religious affiliation: Baptized at the Federated Church, Exira, IA; as an adult, he was a member of First United Methodist Church, Harlan, IA

Military service: U. S. Marine Corp, Jan. 1954; honorably discharged Jan. 1956

Marriage: Phyllis Buttler; April 3, 1954; Exira Christian Church, Exira, Audubon County, IA

Employment: After completing his teaching degree, Chuck began teaching in La Porte City, IA as well as in Bayard, Marengo, and Harlan, IA, teaching middle school and high school science, along with Driver’s Education for 34 years; he retired in 1993. He also coached football, basketball, baseball, and track for several years while teaching and enjoyed refereeing football games.

Hobbies/Interests: Was an active Freemason and belonged to the Exodus Lodge #342, A.F. and A.M. in Exira, IA for 62 years; was a long-time member of the American Legion Ballou Post #332 in Exira; member, National Education Association. Enjoyed maintaining his acreage west of Exira; collected stamps; enjoyed playing cards and cribbage.
