Education: Attended grade school and high school in Tennant, IA, graduating with the Class of 1947; taking shop in high school launched a lifelong hobby of wood crafting. After graduating from high school, she attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Omaha, NE

Religious affiliation: Active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Portsmouth, IA; Millie played guitar for many masses there. After moving to Harlan in 1992, Millie and Alvin joined St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
