Education: Attended school at Kirkman (IA) Community School and Irwin-Kirkman (IA) Community school, from which he graduated with the Class of 1967

Religious affiliation: Baptized and confirmed at the First United Methodist Church, Kirkman, IA

Military service: Drafted into the U.S. Army in Feb. 1968; he trained at Ft. Lewis, WA, and at Ft. Dix, NJ; he then was sent to Viet Nam for a year with the 11th Armored Cavalry until July 1969 when he was transferred Ft. Carson, CO. Honorably discharged in Nov. 1969, having earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars and a Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device.

Marriage: Suzanne Marie Greer; Dec, 2, 1967; United Methodist Church, Harlan, IA

Employment: While in high school, Mike worked on the family farm and with Luke McDowell Garage of Kirkman, IA. After graduating from high school, Mike was employed by Wigness Machine Shop in Harlan, IA until he entered the military. After completing his military service, he farmed with his father and brother raising hogs, corn, and soybeans.

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed camping, boating, canoeing, and bike riding with the family; was a Scoutmaster and Scout leader for his boys' troops; was a life member of the NRA and the Local Post 941 VFW; did gun smithing and acquired a Federal Firearm's License to be a gun dealer; he served more than 51 years as a volunteer fireman on the Douglas Township Fire Department and was Douglas Township Clerk from 1990 - 2021. Enjoyed watching the old westerns on TV and NASCAR.
