Education: Attended grade school at the Lutheran Church in Blue Earth, MN. His high school years were spent at Central High School in Omaha, NE before the family moved to Shelby, IA where he graduated from Shelby-Tennant High School, Class of 1969. After graduation he attended Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, MO and then transferred to the University of Nebraska, Omaha.

Religious affiliation: Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Blue Earth, MN; he later attended the Catholic church
