Employment: Worked for his father at Ideal Hatchery in Harlan, IA, a business which he later purchased. Richard eventually renamed the business Burmeister Farm Store and expanded its operations to offer farm supplies. He bought Squealer Grain in Harlan in 1977 and expanded Burmeister Farm Store to Persia, IA and Portsmouth, IA); he operated it until he sold the grain elevator in 1996. Richard continued offering farm supplies until 2004.
Hobbies/Interests: Member, Shriners, Masons, and was a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge; had served on the Harlan (IA) Industrial Foundation Board and the Harlan Municipal Utilities Board; was a pilot for many years, and enjoyed traveling, as well as reading and fishing. Mostly, he enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
