Education: Attended school at Lincoln #4 Country School in Shelby County, IA, through grade 8; he then graduated from Harlan (IA) High School, Class of 1945

Religious affiliation: Member, First Baptist Church, Harlan, IA; Verl served in numerous positions on the church council.

Military service: Drafted into the U. S. Army, March 1951, serving with the 44th Ordinance Depot Company in Korea. He was discharged in Dec. 1952.

Marriage: Marie Steenbock; Jan. 30, 1954; location not provided

Employment: Farmer; after retiring from the farm in 1985, they moved to Harlan, IA, and Verl began working at the Farm Service Coop until 1995. He then worked part time managing a car wash for 18 years before fully retiring.

Hobbies/Interests: Verl was a board member of Shelby County (IA) Farmer's Mutual Insurance for 27 years, served on the Extension Council, was a 4-H leader, a Lincoln Township Trustee, and was also a member of Shelby County Pork Producers. Verl was inducted into the Shelby County (IA) Hall of Fame at the Shelby County Fair in 2010 and was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Shelby County (IA) Historical Society. Verl and Marie traveled the country and Verl enjoyed woodworking, making things for his kids, grandkids and friends.
