Education: Attended country school in the winter and parochial school in the fall and spring, and graduated from the 8th grade at St. Boniface School in Westphalia, IA, after which she stayed home to help on the family farm.

Employment: As a teenager she did some domestic work for families in Harlan, IA and clerked at a retail store. After she married, she was a farmer’s wife, helping on the farm and raising their 13 children.

Hobbies/Interests: Growing up, Nottie's favorite chores were cooking and baking; during the winters, she enjoyed sewing, embroidering, and making quilts. While raising her own family, she loved to play cards, and would often initiate a game of "Euchre" or "Pitch" on long winter evenings. In later years, she joined the weekly Sewing Circle in Westphalia. Nottie and Emil enjoyed traveling in their later years to visit sites and family.
