Education: At the age of 6, Marilyn and her brother Jack were adopted by Hans Jessen and Ethel Marie (Karstensen) Carstensen and resided with them on their farm south of Elk Horn, IA. She attended Elk Horn (IA) schools until age 17 when the family moved to Atlantic,IA, when she graduated with the Atlantic High School Class of 1956.
