Education: At the age of 6, Marilyn and her brother Jack were adopted by Hans Jessen and Ethel Marie (Karstensen) Carstensen and resided with them on their farm south of Elk Horn, IA. She attended Elk Horn (IA) schools until age 17 when the family moved to Atlantic,IA, when she graduated with the Atlantic High School Class of 1956.

Hobbies/Interests: When she was younger, Marilyn was an avid bowler and she and Dallas bowled on several leagues. In later years, Marilyn and Dallas enjoyed many years of dancing, especially times spent with friends; when the couples no longer danced, they played cards every week.
