Survived by: Wife of 62 years, Georgean of Earling, IA; children, Connie (spouse, Bob) Owens, Allan Assmann and Sheryl (spouse, Frank) Kilton, all of Omaha, NE; 6 grandchildren; a great-grandchild on the way; sisters-in-law, Doris Assmann of LaPalma, CA, and Eunice Assmann of Carroll, IA; brother-in-law, Al Nielsen (spouse, Helen) of Johnston, IA; other family members and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Carl and Edith (nee Rosman) Assmann; brothers, Jim, Francis and Albert; sisters, Donna Lenz, Betty Klein and Linda Nielsen

Education: Attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Earling, IA, and graduated with the Class of 1951

Religious affiliation: Baptized, received his first communion and was confirmed at St. Patrick’s Church in Dunlap, IA; lifelong member there and served on the church council

Military service: U. S. Army for 2 years, including 18 months in Germany during the Korean War; honorably discharged in 1955

Marriage: Georgean Graeve; May 20, 1957; St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Earling, IA

Employment: Farmed corn, beans, cattle and hogs. In 1972, they received the Iowa Master Pork Producers Award; in 1991 their farm received the Century Farm Award

Hobbies/Interests: was President of the Dunlap Farmer Co-op board; President, Shelby County Pork Producers; member and President of the Remote-Control Flyers Club; member, Dunlap American Legion; a jack-of-all-trades, John designed and built his hog buildings (which were featured in Successful Farmer magazine). He built steel trailers, did wood working and could fix anything. They took many family vacations to Disney World in Florida and made trips to Branson, MO. John and Jean enjoyed a trip to Europe for their 50th Anniversary; they also visited South America, Alaska, Hawaii, and took many cruises and bus trips with friends. He enjoyed playing cards, polka dancing and going to casinos.
