Ward Marshall, son of Ray and Tilla (Wegner) Sebern, was born June 12, 1929, at the town of Howard County, IA. The family moved to Glidden, and then to Astor, west of Manilla. Ward graduated from Manilla High School in 1946. He worked for Pederson’s Garage in Manning and then Booth and Olsen Construction. Ward was drafted into the United States Army in 1950 and served for two years during the Korean War before his honorable discharge. He returned to Iowa to help on the family farm.

Ward met Betty Williams at the Columbia Dance Hall in Denison. They were united in marriage on October 27, 1956 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Dow City. They lived and farmed the family farm until 1974 when they purchased the local Chevrolet dealership in Manilla. They ran Sebern Chevrolet for five years before retiring in 1979 and moving to Missouri. After four years they returned to Manilla for good. The family enjoyed many family vacations and Ward and Betty spent several winters in Arizona through the years. Ward’s life-long hobby was restoring old cars and tractors. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla and the American Legion.

Due to his declining health Ward moved to the Manilla Manor Nursing Home. On the morning of May 14, 2019, Ward was transferred to the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison where he died. He was 89 years, 11 months and 2 days of age.

Ward is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Charles (in infancy), Jim and Dick Sebern.

He is survived by his wife Betty Sebern of Denison; five children: Sherri Vaughn (Dave Welch), Denison; Gary Sebern (Jill), Denison; Shauna Allen (Wayne), Ridgeway, MO; DeAnn Leiting (Doug), Carroll; Karen Arkfeld (Rob), Avoca; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
