Education: Attended both elementary and high school in Irwin, IA; he then attended Iowa Western Community College at Clarinda, IA for 2 years before entering the Forestry Program at Iowa State University, Ames, IA. Dale was not able to complete his degree in the 1970's, but he later returned to college and earned his BA in Entrepreneurship from Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, IA.

Religious affiliation: Long-time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Irwin, IA, and held the position of treasurer for more than 10 years.

Employment: Had worked in various construction jobs until he finished his degree and was hired as a field researcher at Wilson Seeds, Harlan, IA, in 1981. This position enabled him to help research the prospect of raising corn on the island of Molokai in Hawaii. He worked as Quality Control of seed production at Remington Seed until his health required he retire in 2015.

Hobbies/Interests: Dale had always loved national parks and took annual vacations in the Rockies. He twice successfully hiked Long’s Peak, a climb of 14,259 ft, as well as having hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Over the years, Dale visited national parks from coast to coast, and his retirement dream was to not just visit, but to be a resident campground host in as many national parks as possible. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for 12 years, helping others less fortunate to build homes. He served several years on 4-H Extension Council. After his health issues forced him into retirement, Dale still found ways to volunteer: He did park clean-up and maintenance for the Department of Natural Resources, and volunteered for Shelby County Community Outreach.
