Education: Attended Ireton, IA; graduated with the Class of 1958; while in high school, she played basketball and was a member of the band. Following graduation, she attended Westmar College, LeMars, IA, where she earned her teaching certificate in 1960.
Religious affiliation: Member, United Lutheran Church, Shelby, IA; she taught Sunday School and Bible school there for many years.

Employment: After her completion of college and her marriage, Karan taught first and second grades in a number of towns in northwest IA; in 1975, they moved to Shelby, IA, and Karan became the meal site coordinator for Shelby Seniors. Later, she worked for Pottawattamie County Health Department for many years.
Hobbies/Interests: gardening; painting; reading; cooking for her family
