Employment: He learned 2 different trades from family members, electrical and masonry: he then owned his own contracting business in Harlan for years, and helped with the masonry and electrical on Elm Crest Retirement Community, as well as the masonry on the new library, Veteran's Auditorium in Harlan, Shelby County Bank, and many of other notable buildings and homes; with Irene, they moved to the Des Moines, IA area in 1987, where Dick worked for Elview Construction with his brother-in-law, Bud Wiuff.

Hobbies/Interests: Avid supporter of Harlan High School Cyclone Athletics; active member of Kiwanis Club of Harlan, IA; with his second wife Linda, traveled extensively across the country as well as to Denmark; enjoyed playing cards
