Employment: After attending college, Gene became a telegrapher for the Rock Island Railroad and was employed there for 5 years. After her marriage, she and Charles operated the Ames (IA) Dairy Queen for 4 years. They then moved to Harlan to own and operate the Dairy Queen there for 30 years. After her husband’s death in 1981, Gene sold the business.
Hobbies/Interests: Gene was very artistic, and enjoyed painting, carving and sculpting; she was engaged to create the eagle to be mounted and displayed at the Shelby County Courthouse in Harlan
