Education: Attended school in Manilla, IA through Grade 6 when he started to help his father with farming

Religious affiliation: Baptized at the Presbyterian Church, Carroll, IA on July 3, 1927; confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Irwin, IA on Dec. 15, 1957.

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Army in March 1944 and served during WWII; he returned home with a medical discharge in Oct. 1945

Marriage: Della Sheer; Sep. 4, 1946; Our Savior Lutheran Church, Audubon, IA

Employment: After his military service, he was employed as an auto mechanic for 5 years, and then farmed for Christoffersen for 5 years before beginning to farm on his own. With wife Della, they farmed for 25 years near Irwin and Manilla, IA. In addition, Vernon drove a school bus for the Irwin (IA) School as well as worked for Robinson Implement in Irwin. They moved to Perry, IA where they owned and operated the D&D Motel. He also drove truck for Rosene Implement for 9 years. After they moved to Boone, IA, Vernon drove the Boone County Transportation Bus for the pre-school and did maintenance work at the senior citizen apartments. Finally, they settled in Harlan, IA, where Vernon drove a bus for handicapped children for 4 years and was the courier for the United Bank of Iowa. He retired on Oct. 20, 2012.

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed fishing; listening to polka music; old cars; spending time with family
