Eiwind “Ike” Johannes Steen Madsen, son of Mads and Margrete (Steen) Madsen, was born February 10, 1926, in Audubon County, Iowa. He attended school in North Dakota through the 8th grade. Ike served in the United States Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge during his tour of duty.

Ike was united in marriage with Leta Johansen on November 17, 1947 at Hiawatha, Kansas. The couple made their home in Kimballton, Iowa. Ike worked as a truck driver and started his own business, Madsen Trucking, in the early 1950’s. The family moved to an acreage outside of Elk Horn in 1964.
