Died: March 15, 2018; Avoca Specialty Care, Avoca, Pottawattamie County, IA

Funeral services: Monday, March 19, 2018; Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, Windsor Heights, IA; burial was at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, IA

Survived by: Daughter, Susan (spouse, Allen) Schneider of Harlan, IA; grandchildren, Todd (spouse, Kara) Schneider of Waukee and Erin (spouse, Aaron) Erickson of Castana, IA; great-grandsons, Brayden and Lane Schneider; other family and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Charles and Clara (nee Reinicke) Schachterle; wife, Lorraine (deceased in 1997); son, John (deceased in 2009); grandson, Gregory Allen (deceased in 1982)

Education: attended Osceola Township #5 school for grades 1-8 and graduated from Geneva (IA) High School, Class of 1945; he then attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, IA, interrupted by his WWII service, before finishing his schooling and graduating from Hamilton Business College in 1948. He furthered his education at Drake University, Des Moines, IA, with a Business major and graduated in 1951.

Religious affiliation: Long-time member, Windsor Heights Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA, having joined in 1951. He maintained his membership there even after he moved to Avoca Lodge Assisted Living in 2016.

Military service: Drafted in to the U. S. Army, serving in Japan for 18 months, near the end of WWII

Marriage: Lorraine Munday; Aug. 8, 1954; location not provided

Employment: Following College, Charles taught High School Business at Polk City for 3 years. After his marriage, he worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Des Moines, IA, as Training Director and Supervisor of Employee Development for the next 30 years, retiring in 1985. Charles then continued to work part-time for Iowa State Bank and then as Director of the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry. In addition, he also worked a few hours every month through Des Moines University.

Hobbies/Interests: volunteered for many years at Lutheran Hospital
