Funeral services: Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018; Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home, Atlantic, IA; burial, with military graveside rites was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, on Jan. 22, 2018.

Education: The family had many relocations and Keary attended elementary schools in Edinburg, McAllen and Brownsville, TX, and then attended 4th grade in Onawa, IA when his family relocated there in 1959. During junior high school the family moved to Moorhead, IA and Keary attended school in both Moorhead and Blencoe, IA. In 1965, the family moved to their final family home in Harlan, IA and Keary graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1968. He went on to receive an associate’s degree from Iowa Western Community College in 1977, and transferred to the University of Iowa for additional studies in 1978.

Religious affiliation: no information provided

Military service: Entered the U. S. Army in Oct. 1968 and went to Ft. Lewis, WA for boot camp before going on to Ft. Benning, GA, for advanced infantry training. After completion, he attended Non-Commissioned Officer’s School and won an award for outstanding trainee as a paratrooper in Airborne Ranger School. Following completion, he served in the Special Forces in Viet Nam and received 2 purple hearts for being wounded by enemy fire. Keary was transferred to the Army Reserves in July 1970, and honorably discharged from the Armed Forces in Sep. 1974.
