Education: attended school in Harlan, IA, and then in TN, where his family had moved with his father’s employment. They returned to Harlan, and graduated from Harlan High School, Class of 1952. He then attended Westmar College in LeMars, IA, for some months until his enlistment in March 1953.

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Harlan, IA; active member, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, and was a member of the Men’s Choir, as well as being a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Military service: With his twin brother, Lavern, Leonard enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in March 1953. Both served their country honorably during the Korean War. Honorably discharged March 1957.

Marriage: June Brown; Sep. 15, 1956; St. Louis Bertrand’s Catholic Church, Oakland, CA

Employment: After his military service, he and June returned to Harlan, IA so Leonard could help at his father’s business, Petsche Plumbing and Heating. After the death of his father in 1960, Leonard and his brothers continued to operate the business until their retirement in 1998.

After retiring, June and Leonard began traveling to Arizona where they ended up building a home. They were active in the Mary Magdalen and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Churches in Queen Creek, AZ. They returned to Harlan, IA in early 2017.
