Marilyn Schwarte
January 24, 1937 - May 22, 2017

Marilyn Magdalen, daughter of Mathew and Mary (Gross) Freund, was born January 24, 1937, in Earling, Iowa. She grew up in Earling where she attended and graduated from St. Joseph’s School. Marilyn was nicknamed “Mip” at a very young age and was affectionately known by that name her entire life to family and friends closest to her.

On September 24, 1957, Marilyn was united in marriage with Gene Schwarte at St. Joseph’s Church in Earling. Four children were born to this union. The couple farmed near Defiance until 1965 when they settled on a farm three miles north of Manilla. After Gene died unexpectedly on August 27, 1979, Marilyn moved into Manilla and made her home there until moving to Denison in November 2016.

On Monday, May 22, 2017, Marilyn passed away unexpectedly at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa.

Marilyn was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla where she was active with the Rosary and Altar Society and the choir. Throughout the years, she enjoyed attending her children’s sports and school activities, traveling with her children and grandchildren and quilting with other women in the community. She took great joy in her grandchildren and spending time with all family and friends. Marilyn’s children regard her as a pillar of strength as she raised them as a widow.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister Eunice (Louie) Masching and a brother Jim Freund.

She is survived by four children: Terrance and Kathleen Schwarte of Denison; Joni Tonnemacher and husband Doug of Johnston; and Alan Schwarte and wife Jill of Albia; four grandchildren: Alexis, Zachary, Hannah and Mason; siblings: Patty (Chris) Blum of Harlan; Lois (Don) Sonntag of Atlantic; Alice (Don) Miller of Defiance; Dennis (Helen) Freund of Earling; and Phil (Jane) Freund of Dow City; and by the numerous members of Gene’s family as well nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family respectfully requests that all donations be in the form of memorial donations to parkinson’s research or Catholic Charities.
