Biography

Harold John, son of Ernest and Mennie (Sieck) Pieper, was born December 2, 1929, at Minden, IA. Harold graduated from Walnut High School in 1947. He worked for a time as a farm hand for Wilfred Jensen in the Kimballton area. From 1951 to 1954 Harold served in the United States Navy on a gunner ship.

Following his honorable discharge he worked as a farm hand for Wilfred. On October 19, 1956, Harold was united in marriage with Alice Knudsen at Jacksonville. The couple lived and farmed in the Jacksonville area and then purchased a farm in the Irwin area in 1960. He began working in maintenance at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn in 1982 and he and Alice moved in to Kimballton the following year. Harold retired in 2000 but continued to volunteer at the home. He was a faithful member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Harold’s hobby was working on Model T cars and trucks.

Alice cared for Harold in their home as his health declined. Following a short hospital stay, Harold died at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa on Sunday, April 16, 2017. He was 87 years, 4 months and 15 days of age.

Preceding him in death are his parents; sister Evelyn Kalmbrunn and her husband Louie; and grandson Jamie Lee Pieper.

He is survived by his wife Alice Pieper of Kimballton; son Kevin Pieper and Pamela Sebeniecher of Kimballton; two grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister-in-law Fern Knudsen of Jacksonville; other relatives and friends.
