Education: attended grade school at Laurel, New Park and West Ridge Elementary Schools; he then attended Harlan Community High School, and graduated with the Class of 1989. He then went on to Westmar College in LeMars, IA for a year before returning home. As a youth, he played little league baseball and was also a member of the Monroe Standby’s 4-H Club. He showed lambs at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, IA and was active in the FFA chapter while in high school. Years later, he returned to school to recieve his associate’s degree in Agri-Business Technology at Iowa Western Community College.

Religious affiliation: baptized, confirmed, and a lifetime member at First United Methodist Church, Harlan, IA; he was active in MYF

Employment: went to work with a wheat crew for a season throughout the Midwest, traveling from Texas to North Dakota before returning home and working various jobs around SW Iowa, including working construction. Later, after working at a hog farm, he went back to construction and worked at the Fareway meat counter. After he earned his AA degree, he did his internship at Nelson Farm Supply in Harlan, IA. He then went to work at FAC Coop in Schleswig, IA as an agronomist and later drove truck for G&R Feed and Grain and various farmers in Shelby County, IA. Next, he was employed by the City of Harlan as the grounds keeper for the City Park’s Department.

Hobbies/Interests: member, Harlan Volunteer Fire Department, the Parian Masonic Lodge No. 321 A.F. and A.M., the Abu Bekr Temple of Sioux City, IA, and the Harlan Shrine T-Patrol. He loved attending his kids’ activities, helped coach the boys in youth football and baseball, enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, and tinkering with antique tractors.
