Funeral services: Memorial Prayer Service, Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan, IA. Memorial Celebration of Life Service, Oct. 8, 2016, Rohde Funeral Home, Kingsley, IA. Pastor Phillip Nielsen of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, IA, officiated at both services. Burial of ashes was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Pierson, IA, with military rites provided by Nash American Legion Post #140, Kingsley, IA.

Survived by: wife, Sally Michaelsen Wheatley Nairn of Harlan, IA; sons, Burton Nairn and Gary Nairn, both of IN; step-children, Andrea (spouse, Shannon) Miller of Walnut, IA, Ryan (spouse Stephanie) Wheatley of Estherville, IA, and Megan (spouse, Jake) Fuhs of Shelby, IA; sisters-in-law, Diana Nairn of Pierson, IA, and Priscilla (spouse, Marcus) Thraen of Earling, IA; grandchildren, Hunter Wheatley, Maddysen Wheatley, and Sadee Wheatley, all of Estherville, IA, and Abigail Jacobsen and Brayden Miller, both of Walnut, IA; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Lloyd “Casey” and Viola (nee VanBuskirk) Nairn; sister, Alice Nairn Mansfield; brother, Ronald “Ronnie” Nairn

Education: attended Grand Meadow (IA) School until Grade 8; graduated from Kingsley-Pierson (IA) High School, Class of 1963; attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux City, IA and graduated in 1965

Religious affiliation: member, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, IA

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Navy in Sep. 1965 and attended Boot Camp in San Diego, CA. His duty assignments included serving on the Destroyer USS Douglas H. Fox, and participating in war exercises in Guantanamo, Cuba. He attended Communication Yeoman School in Norfolk, VA and then went to the Communication Base in Barrigada, Guam, for 19 months. He volunteered for Viet Nam and received orders to a repair barge in Da Nang, Vietnam, where he was a parts man and supply clerk for the engineering department; discharged in Long Beach, CA in March 1969.

Marriages: (1) Marjorie Walter; Nov. 1973; location not provided. They later divorced. (2) Sally Michaelsen Wheatley; Sep. 22, 2009; Las Vegas, NV

Employment: After his military service, he was employed as a bookkeeper for a jewelry store, worked at 2 finance companies, and finally went to work for the Kraft candy factory in Kendallville, IN., doing maintenance for more than 31 years before retiring in 2005.

Hobbies/Interests: enjoyed yard work, watching and feeding birds, and fishing, travel, going to casinos; also loved attending the Harlan Cyclones home basketball games
