Funeral services: Thursday, April 7, 2016; Bethel Baptist Church, Harlan, IA; burial was in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, IA.

Survived by: Wife of 61 years, Rosalie Andersen of Harlan, IA; daughters, Lori (spouse, Joe) Clancy of Davenport, IA, Keri (spouse, Leo) Brooker of Jefferson, IA, and Lisa (spouse, Dwight) Osborn of Cedar Rapids, IA; son, Gary (spouse, Kelley) Andersen of Blair, NE; grandsons, Jeffrey Osborn of Iowa City, IA, Noah and Gilley Andersen of Blair, NE; granddaughters, Erin (spouse, Greg) Westergaard and their sons Brady and Beckett of Polk City, IA, Emily (spouse, Joe) Davis and their son Jorgen, of Omaha, NE, and Molly Osborn of Cedar Rapids, IA; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Elmer H. and Florence Delilah (nee Smith) Andersen

Education: attended Kirkman (Shelby Co., IA) school and graduated from Harlan (Iowa) High School, Class of 1951, where he played basketball; in addition, he was a member of Future Farmers of America and 4-H, showing his livestock at the county fair.

Religious affiliation: member, Bethel Baptist Church, Harlan, IA, serving as a Sunday school teacher and as a deacon for many years.

Military service: Drafted into the U.S. Army in early 1955; he completed basic training in AR and was then transferred to Fort Lee, VA, for further training. By the end 1955, Richard was transferred again to Fort Ord, CA, and the family moved with him. He worked training new recruits with proper gear and tools, and was his discharged in early 1957.

Marriage: Rosalie Larsen; June 1, 1953; Bethel Baptist Church, Harlan, IA

Employment: Taught by his father, after graduation Richard raised and cared for cattle, learning the farming business. After completing his military service, he returned to Shelby County to farm and also worked part time in town at the Farm Service Coop and for Alloway. After retiring from working the farm, he worked part time for Sorensen Equipment in Harlan.

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with high school friends; later, numerous family camping trips would happen. Richard and Rosalie became snowbirds after retirement, enjoying the first few months of each year in Arizona.
