Military service: U. S. Marine Corps, 1952 to 1954, having served in Korea

Marriage: Janice Pauley; May 9, 1959; St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Panama, IA

Employment: Upon graduation, he was employed by the State Bank of Portsmouth in the Panama (IA) office. After his military service from 1952 to 1954, he returned to his job at the bank and later transferred to the bank’s main branch in Portsmouth, IA. He was the executive vice president when he retired in 1992 after 43 years with the bank. He also started the Waltz Insurance Agency.

Hobbies/Interests: An active volunteer, he served as mayor of Portsmouth, IA and on the city council; he was a member of the volunteer fire department (having served as fire chief), was a member of the American Legion Post No. 547, the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941, and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and horse races, and also owned greyhound racing dogs for several years.
