Facts
Born: December 10, 1922
Death: December 19, 2015

Phyllis Marie Hodne, daughter of Charles and Rose Stribe, was born December 10, 1922 in Manning in Carroll County, Iowa. She started country school north of Manning at age four to help keep the school open. She graduated from Manning High School as Salutatorian. She sang soprano and enjoyed music throughout her lifetime.

Phyllis moved to Des Moines at the age of 16 and studied at the American Institute of Business. She then worked at the Iowa Tax Commission, assisting the head of the Use Tax Department. She lived at Hawthorn Hill with other young rural women.

Phyllis then attended the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1948. She worked as a part-time secretary for the University’s President. She served dinners in a boarding home for university teachers.

On February 19, 1950, Phyllis was united in marriage with Tobias Selmer Hodne at the Presbyterian Church in Manning.

Phyllis and Selmer began farming in 1951 near Irwin. Their mutual love of farming and rural life was central to their 46 happy years of marriage. Their diversified crop and livestock farm kept them busy. She worked hard in her active roles in all aspects of the farm, including bookkeeping and buying feeder calves in Wyoming. They traveled to various states and Canada where they enjoyed fishing.

Phyllis greatly enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, sewing, quilting and home making. She was a loving wife and mother. She was a dedicated caregiver for her eldest son, Steven, who became quadriplegic in 1989. Her intelligence, kindness and sense of humor were appreciated by many people, as were her great down-home meals. She was a long-time member of the Jefferson Friendly Club beginning in the mid-1970s. Members made quilts for their families and community groups.

Phyllis entered the Manning Plaza in 2009; she died there on December 19, 2015 at the age of 93 years and 9 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Earl Stribe; sisters, Arlene Wood and Vera Budde; and son, Steven Hodne.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Carol Hodne of Coralville, IA and Douglas Hodne, his wife Susan, and grandchildren Tobias and Giovanna of Torrance, CA.
