Darlene M. Hansen 1928 - 2012
Des Moines

Darlene Mae Hansen, 84, passed from this life on Monday, August 13, 2012, at Mercy Hospice. In agreement with Darlene's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service celebrating Darlene's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was a member. The church is located at 4114 Allison Avenue, corner of Franklin and Beaver in Beaverdale. The family will greet friends at a reception following the Saturday memorial service at the church.

Darlene was born the daughter of William J. and Agnes (Leander) Hansen on May 12, 1928 in Elk Horn, Iowa. She was a student at Simpson College, when she met the love of her life, Lyle Hansen, who had been in the V-12 program and graduated with honors, a civil engineering degree and commission in the navy all by age 19. Darlene worked at the State Auditors Office when one lovely June morning, Lyle took Darlene flying in a two seater airplane and proposed. They were married on November 2, 1947, in Elk Horn, Iowa, and were blessed with five children.

Darlene enjoyed being a full time homemaker while the children were young, and then in the 1970's went to work for the Des Moines Schools as a secretary and teachers associate at Smouse School (for handicapped children) and the Douglass Learning Center (for children with behavior and learning disabilities). She also enjoyed gardening, volunteer work and was active in her church. Darlene and Lyle had opportunities to travel, make friends, and delight in building beautiful memories around the world.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 65 years, Lyle A. Hansen; children, Connie of St Augustine, FL, Ted of Des Moines, IA, Tim of Berkeley, CA, Roger of Des Moines, IA, Vicki of Luxembourg in Europe; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one brother, Willis Hansen of Elk Horn, IA. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the tremendous care, love and support Darlene received from all the doctors, nurses, and entire staff at Mercy Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorials be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church Foundation.

Darlene's ashes are interned at Resthaven Mausoleum. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/desmoinesregister/obituary.aspx?pid=159197825#sthash.P2cOJJKS.dpuf ~ The Des Moines Register Legacy, Des Moines, Iowa. Aug 2012.
