Survived by: Wife of 38 years, Geri Howerter of Harlan, IA; daughter, Jeralyn (spouse, Dean) Fiedler of Priest Lake, ID; son, Ross (spouse, Jane) Jacobsen of Colorado Springs, CO; granddaughters, Angela, Emma, Grace, and Margaret; great-grandson, Laz; other family members and friends

Predeceased by: birth mother, Faye (nee Hendersen) Howerter; father, Ghlee Howerter; adoptive mother, Bertha; sister, Thelma Orwig

Education: attended Cuba schools graduating from Cuba Senior High School. Sheldon then enrolled in the University of Illinois where he received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Dairy Science and Animal Nutrition.

Military service: U. S. Army; he served his country during the Korean War honorably until his discharge on May 19, 1954. While in the service, he served as a communications officer and achieved the rank of Major and received the National Defense Service Medal.

Employment: Upon his discharge from the Air Force, Sheldon returned to the research division of Armour and Company in Chicago, IL where he worked for 4 years. He then went to work for Dawe’s Laboratories in Chicago and traveled throughout the U.S., formulating animal feeds for several breeds. Sheldon desired to leave the Chicago area and flew to Harlan, IA, and was impressed with the operation there; he accepted a sales position with Squealor Feed in 1959. After a few years, he was able to buy stock in the company and became a part of management as well as having ownership. In December 1974 Sheldon was named President of The Feed Company. By this time, Squealor Feed had expanded to Des Moines and Tipton, IA. He continued there until the plant was sold in 1990. Sheldon then accepted a position with International Service Corps where he assisted with crop production in several foreign countries, including Poland and Lithuania, until his retirement.

Hobbies/Interests: Was active in the Harlan Kiwanis Club where he held several offices, including president. His volunteer work in Kiwanis continued on the district and national level, where he served as District Governor for the Iowa-Nebraska District of Kiwanis International. He enjoyed flying a Piper Lance as a licensed airplane pilot.
