Military service: Drafted, U.S. Army, with basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO; was then stationed at Ft. Hood, Killeen, TX, for 1-1/2 years. Honorably discharged.

Employment: While in high school, Charles started working with Mel Reid at Reid’s Body Shop in Harlan, IA. After his military sxervice, he resumed working at Reid’s Body Shop until he started Summer’s Body Shop. In 1964, Charles began racing stock cars throughout southwest Iowa, and was track champion 2 years in a row at Corning. He continued racing for over 20 years until his health forced him to quit. He did, however, continue to build cars for many years in Shelby and Crawford counties.

Hobbies/Interests: gardening, singing (belonged to a barber shop chorus in Denison for over 20 years); camping with friends and family most every summer weekend; riding motorcycles with friends
