Funeral services: The family greeted friends at a visitation held on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, IA. No services were held.

Employment: Worked at the Oakland Beef Plant in Oakland, IA. After its’ closure, Rick briefly drove trucks for Jim’s Wholesale Meats in Harlan, IA before going to work at the Western Iowa Pork Plant in Harlan. He then worked with his brother, Ron, at the Family Bowl for a few years. Finally, he was employed by Proliant until his retirement due to health issues.
Hobbies/Interests: loved playing slow pitch softball and helped start the very first league in Harlan, IA. He also umpired local softball and baseball games for many years. Rick loved coaching baseball, and helped coach hundreds of kids while his kids were growing up and several more when his grandchildren began playing; at that time, he acquired the name “Coach Grandpa.” He worked to instill a passion for the game into each child, always trying to teach them that learning something, getting better as a team and having fun was always more important than winning. He was an avid sports fan watching several games no matter who was playing on television; also enjoyed NASCAR and bowling.
