Employment: In his youth, Louis worked with his father who owned and operated the Merrell Canning Company and the Brickyard Orchard. He was a master machinist and opened Harlan Welding and Machine and ran it for 25 years. He retired in 2000 from Bond Equipment located in Logan, IA.

Hobbies/Interests: Member, Harlan Golf and Country Club board of directors; member, Harlan Band Parents Organization; member, Odd Fellows; member, Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150; 20-year member, Harlan Fire Department; former member, Harlan City Council. Louis loved to play golf; his mechanical and electrical abilities allowed him to repair anything brought to him.
