Survived by: Wife of 60 years, Gayle Berninghaus, of Harlan, IA; daughters, Gwen (spouse, Gene) Ott of Connersville, IN, Gisele Berninghaus (spouse, Tim Van Eyck) of Appleton, WI and Gloria Music of Gillette, WY; son, Garth (spouse, Cheryl) Berninghaus of Poulsbo, WA; brother, Delbert Berninghaus of Emmetsburg, IA; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild
Predeceased by: Parents, Rudolf and Meta (nee Bierstedt) Berninghaus; sister, Leona Herman; brothers, Paul, Edwin, and Toby.
Education: graduated from West Bend High School, West Bend, IA; he completed his lay training in Milwaukee, WI, and obtained his Masters of Divinity from Lutheran Seminary in Springfield, IL. He was ordained on March 13, 1994.
Religious affiliation: Lutheran
Military service: served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Marriage: Gayle Anliker, Oct. 21, 1953, West Bend, IA
Employment: He served many congregations as pastor in MT, WY, and NE, and at Bethlehem Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Omaha, NE, where he could use his sign language abilities for the congregation. Gilbert and his wife were also house parents for students at the Montana School for the Deaf.
Hobbies/Interests: He enjoyed gardening, playing pinochle, hunting, fishing, reading, and especially spending time with his family. He was a fan of many sports and he loved to sing.
