Edwin Jacob, son of Joseph and Pauline (Schenk) Reischl, was born June 29, 1922 on a farm near Defiance, IA. He attended St. Paul’s School in Defiance through the eighth grade. After completing his schooling he worked on the family farm.

In August of 1945, Ed enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served until July of 1946 when he received his honorable discharge at Great Lakes, IL. Ed was then a carpenter for a couple of years before he began farming.

On February 20, 1950, Ed was united in marriage with Irene A. Schwarte at St. Peter’s Church in Defiance. They were the parents of six children. Ed and Irene farmed near Defiance, Kirkman, and south of Harlan until 1964 when they began farming near Manning. In 1985 he retired from farming and they moved into Manning. Ed was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning and served on the Sacred Heart Council. He was a loyal member of the American Legion, Emil Ewoldt Post 22, where he served as Commander for three terms and a Past Farm Bureau Director. In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards, golfing, visiting with friends and especially looked forward to those times at the round table at Deb’s Corner Café. Above all, Ed cared for his family and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandson.

Ed’s health had been declining the past year and he entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. He died on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at the Manning Hospital at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 14 days.

Preceeding him in death are his parents; son Dennis Reischl in 1974; grandson Caleb Reischl in 1997; sister Mary Ann and her husband Leroy Stevenson and brother Joseph Reischl.

Ed is survived by his wife Irene Reischl of Manning; five children: Ronald Reischl and wife Julie of Georgetown, TX; Teresa Reischl of Denison; Sharon and husband Joe Odendahl of Westside; John Reischl and wife Nancy of Fairmont, MN and Gary Reischl and wife Wanda of Manilla; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers Fr. Fred Reischl of Council Bluffs and Norbert Reischl and wife Noni of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters Cecelia and husband Harry Kleffman of Harlan and Lee and husband Don Smith of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law Mary Kay Reischl of Earling; other in-laws: Albert Schwarte and wife Gay; Joe Schwarte and wife Vernita; Glenda and husband Lou Hall all of Defiance; Richard Schwarte and wife Myrna of Irwin; Marilyn Schwarte of Manilla; Karen and husband Clarence Brinker of Westphalia; Thelma and husband Gordon Nelson of Harlan; Harry Schwarte of Carroll; Sister Madonna Schwarte of Omaha, NE and Sister Darlene Schwarte of Davenport; many other relatives and friends.
